BetterStack Overview

BetterStack monitors your infrastructure. It checks your endpoints from around the world, alerts you when something goes down, aggregates your application logs, and gives you incident management tools. The status pages are clean and professional. The alerting supports Slack, email, SMS, and phone calls.

This is the tool that calls your phone at 2 AM because your server ran out of disk space. It's the tool that shows your users a nice status page when they wonder if the app is down for everyone or just them. And it's the tool you open to search through your logs when you're debugging why your API returned 500 errors for the last hour.

I run BetterStack on every production project. The free tier covers uptime monitoring for multiple endpoints, which is all most solo developers need to start.

Plausible Overview

Plausible tracks your website traffic. How many visitors, which pages they view, where they come from, what devices they use. All without cookies, all GDPR-compliant, all displayed on a single clean dashboard that loads instantly.

This is the tool you check in the morning to see if your latest blog post is getting traffic. It's the tool that shows you which referral sources drive real visitors. And it's the tool that confirms whether your marketing efforts are working or burning money.

I use Plausible instead of Google Analytics on all my sites. At $9/month (or free if you self-host), it gives me everything I need without the complexity, privacy concerns, or consent banners that come with Google Analytics.

Key Differences

Completely different tools. BetterStack and Plausible solve entirely different problems. BetterStack tells you if your site is working. Plausible tells you if anyone is visiting it. There is zero feature overlap between them.

Plausible starts at $9 per month for the cloud version at 10,000 monthly pageviews, scaling to $19 per month at 100,000 pageviews, and it can be self-hosted for free under AGPL-3.0. Both are affordable for solo developers.

Privacy impact. Plausible is built entirely around privacy. No cookies, no personal data, no consent banners needed. BetterStack processes operational data (server logs, response times) which doesn't directly impact user privacy. Both are fine from a privacy perspective, but Plausible specifically helps you avoid GDPR headaches for analytics.

Setup time. Both are fast to set up. BetterStack takes about 15 minutes to configure uptime checks, alerts, and a status page. Plausible takes about 2 minutes. Add a script tag to your HTML and you're done.

When to Choose BetterStack

  • The first paid tier costs $29 per month billed annually, or $34 per month billed monthly. It unlocks 30-second check intervals, phone and SMS alerts, and on-call scheduling with escalations.
  • Additional uptime monitors are sold in blocks of 50 starting around $21 to $25 per month, and extra log management ingestion is a separate add-on.

  • The self-hosted Community Edition is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. The latest release is v3.2.1, published on May 15, 2026.
  • The project is written in Elixir and carries roughly 26,597 GitHub stars and 1,559 forks. Because the codebase is Elixir rather than a JavaScript package, there is no npm download figure to report. The tracking snippet you embed is tiny, and the dashboard is the part that ships as the Elixir app.

Real Cost at Solo-Dev Scale

Assume a realistic solo project for a full year: one production web app plus a marketing site, a single status page, and around 40,000 monthly pageviews once the blog starts ranking. You want fast downtime alerts and clean privacy-friendly analytics.

Monitoring with BetterStack. A solo dev usually does not need the paid tier on day one. The free tier covers the 10 monitors and the status page, and the only real loss is that checks run every 3 minutes instead of every 30 seconds, and there is no phone or SMS alert. If you stay on free, that is $0 per month. If downtime detection speed matters enough to pay, the Team tier is $29 per month billed annually, which works out to $348 for the year. Most solo projects start on free and upgrade only when an outage actually costs them something.

Analytics with Plausible. At 40,000 monthly pageviews you sit above the 10,000-pageview Starter entry point but below the 100,000 tier, so you land on Starter priced for that volume. The published anchors are $9 per month at 10,000 pageviews and $19 per month at 100,000 pageviews, so budget at the higher end of that band for 40,000, roughly $14 to $19 per month. Take annual billing and you get 2 months free, so call it about $140 to $190 for the year. Or self-host the free Community Edition on a small VPS you may already be paying for, dropping the analytics software cost to $0 plus your server.

The realistic blended number. Free BetterStack plus self-hosted Plausible is $0 in software, just your existing VPS. Free BetterStack plus Plausible cloud at this traffic is roughly $140 to $190 per year, all of it analytics. Paying for both, with BetterStack Team and Plausible cloud, lands near $490 to $540 for the year. The cheap path is real and it is the one most solo devs should take first.

The Verdict

Use both. They're not competing products. They're different categories of tools that every solo developer project benefits from.

BetterStack tells you the system is healthy. Plausible tells you people are using it. You need both signals to run a solo project effectively.

If budget forces you to pick one, think about where your project is in its lifecycle. Early stage, still building, few users: BetterStack first. Uptime monitoring matters even with 10 users. You can check server access logs for basic traffic data.

Growth stage, marketing actively, need to understand traffic: Plausible first. You need to know which channels drive visitors and which content performs. Uptime monitoring matters less if you're not getting traffic yet (though it's still nice to have).

The ideal setup: BetterStack free tier for uptime monitoring plus Plausible at $9/month for analytics. Total cost of $9/month for both infrastructure monitoring and web analytics. That's a solid foundation for any solo project.
